Day 1
Flight to Zagreb. Coach transfer to Pula via Zagreb archaeological museum. Hotel
for evening meal.
Day 2
Visit to central Pula, a significant port under Octavian with an impressive amphitheatre amongst other remains, then Villa Rustica at Dragonera (ancient olive installation). Continue to the lovely ports of Betiga (Murter), Fazana and Brijuni Islands National Park for the remains of two second century B.C. Roman villas on the fabulous Verige Gulf. Return to hotel for evening meal via Nezakcij (Nesactium), daylight hours permitting.
Day 3
An exciting drive to Petrapelosa Citadel in the Brancana canyon. Umag, built upon the foundations of a Roman seaside resort, the town retains its network of narrow streets within the remains of town walls, defence towers and archaeological museum housed in the medieval town fortress. Return via the Bronze Age Citadel of Monkodonja to hotel for evening meal.
Day 4
Venetian walled islet of Zadar (Liburnian Zara) across a narrow isthmus. The traffic free streets follow the Roman street plan, archaeological museum, Augustan Roman Forum, Church of St Donatus (built of Capitoline spoils), marble columns, watch tower and aqueduct remains beyond the ramparts. These and the numerous Byzantine Churches can be explored in a relaxing day. Return to hotel for evening meal.
Day 5
Situated in a lagoon linked by two sixteenth century stone bridges, Illyrian Nin (Aenona) shows evidence of Roman habitation in villas, mosaics, Capitoline Temple and underwater harbour workings. The museum’s Roman collection also includes two eleventh century Condura Croatica boats and a copy of part of the first century Serilia Liburnica boat. The key to the tiny ninth century Church of St Anselmo “the smallest cathedral in the Christian world” may be requested here. Illyrian Benkovac (Asseria) – extant remains date from fifthc entury B.C. with impressive walls, forum, thermae, necropolis and Triumphal Arch – one of seven built in honour of Trajan. Split hotel for evening meal.
Day 6
Visit Diocletian’s Palace in Split, continue to Romanesque-Gothic Trogir with its Hellenistic street plan and the Kairos Relief of Lysippos in the Convent of St. Nicholas. Visit Solin (Salona) – ampthitheatre and Diocletian’s Mausoleum, now a Basilica honouring many early Christian martyrs. Possible excursion to Villa Maritima before returning to hotel for evening meal.
Day 7
Vid (Narona), originally an emporium, now the site of a visionary archaeological museum built upon a Forum and Augusteum with over 900 artefacts including 15 statues of the Imperial family. The village, surrounding walls and Eres Tower also merit investigation. Return to hotel for evening meal.
Day 8
Final visit to Split for St. Duje’s cathedral, Peristyle Square, Temple of Jupiter and archaeological museum before airport transfer.
